Long held perspectives and motivations can change, values may be tested and for the athlete, there can be a sense of guilt that training goals are not being met, or if we continue to train, that our time could be better spent at home. Everyone is tired. As men, we also contend with maternal preoccupation, our changed relationship with our spouse, and contending with our new role as a father - which for many of us can be a steep learning curve. |

On Monday I set out to complete a 146km loop of the Hollyford Track and Big Bay - Pyke Route in three days. The plan was to be dropped off at 1:00pm on Monday (Day 1) and be picked up on Wednesday (Day 3) at 1:00pm. The Hollyford is a 56km track that starts at the Lower Hollyford Road and leads to the old port of Martins Bay. The Pyke - Big Bay Route is described as a strenuous route, suitable for experienced and well equipped trampers. Sections of it are prone to flooding and often become impassable in wet weather. This weekend a James Kuegler Coaching athlete will attempt to run the Leadville Trail 100 (160km) in 25 hours, passing twice over a mountain outside of Leadville, Colorado. How do you train somebody to do that, and how does it fit with the ethos of the lifelong runner?
Drury-based running coach James Kuegler demonstrated the form he works to instil in his students last Saturday, by winning the 26km Captain Cook’s Landing race over the Queen Charlotte Track near Nelson.

The long course (20km) has a great mix of runnable, and technical terrain. Due to the above, and perhaps the appeal of the self proclaimed NZ Trail Running Championship the event attracts a unique blend of trail runners, road runners, orienteers, and various other forms of runners. Each brings with them a different set of skills, which makes for an exciting event to be part of.
