Self Determination Theory is a theory of motivation which basically suggests that our motivation sits on a continuum with amotivation (or no motivation) at one end, and intrinsic motivation at the other.
In the middle we move from amotivation - external regulation - introjected regulation - identified regulation - integrated regulation to intrinsic motivation.
To the degree that our inbuilt psychological needs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness are met is the degree to which you will be (intrinsically) motivated.
Relatedness is about feeling cared for, connected and having a sense of belonging. This is a two way street of not only being treated well, but also of treating others well.
Competence is about having a sense of mastery and effectiveness that fulfils a sense of well-being personally and amongst other things.
Autonomy is about decision making. Self endorsed and self initiated behaviour as well as a sense of choice-fulness. When one is wholeheartedly behind the thing doing, they generally will do better.
So what does that mean for the next period of time.
Well, that is up to you, though here are a few suggestions:
Spend time developing your running technique.
Concentrate your efforts on increasing your running economy and/or capacity and/or speed.
Join a (small hygienic) running group and connect with others as well as feel connected to others.
Help a friend to develop their economy and/or capacity.
Go strava hunting…. (that one is a joke).
See if you can train more consistently stacking week on top of week of maximally sustainable volume.
Create your own adventure(s).
Devote some time and energy to building or maintaining a trail that you love.
What suggestions do you have for those wanting move to a greater level of intrinsic motivation?
