Berlin Marathon, Germany
The Berlin Marathon is regarded as the fastest marathon course in the world. This reputation draws the best elite marathon runners from around the world. The marathon world record has been held and advanced on the Berlin Marathon course since 2003. First by Paul Tergat (2:04:55) and subsequently, Haile Gebrselassi, Patrick Makau, Wilson Kipsang, and now Dennis Kimetto. In 2014, Kimetto set a new world record of 2:02:57, and became the first man to run under two hours three minutes.
Apart from being one of the fastest courses in the world, the Berlin Marathon is also one of the largest, hosting 40,000 starters in the marathon. The course starts and finishes near the historic Brandenburg Gate and loops around the city's major landmarks.
