Riding The Nutritional Swing

Article by Dr. Tim Leeming. Exercise Nutritionist, Chiropractor.

We’ve all sat on the nutritional rollercoaster at some stage.  Some of us are constantly stuck on it, riding front row, craving the next popular trend in food and health!  Pun intended…

Not many would argue that the path to understanding how to eat for optimal health is like that of a swing or a pendulum.  Cycling back and forth between extremes, from one thing to the other.  Low fat to high fat.  Carb loading to low carb.  Macro counting to forgetting macros altogether.  These are just some of the more popular examples from the past few decades or less.

Archaic Nutrition Guidelines

Why are we teaching today's athletes archaic nutrition guidelines?
Article by Dr. Tim Leeming. Exercise Nutritionist, Chiropractor.
What’s up with nutritional guidelines for athletes these days? The advice that our national organisations and regional centres continue to push?  I’ve got to say, they just don’t seem to have changed much since I was having that stuff fed to me 15 years ago!

This is certainly a polarising topic. A quick look on any social media post in recent times will indicate just how ‘knickers in a knot’ some people will get about nutrition.  Athletes, in particular, seem to get extra riled up about it all.

The reason I make these comments is to counter with the notion that I’m going to try very hard to address a few pertinent points associated with food, nutrition and athletes in as balanced and diplomatic manner as I can.

Article by Tim Leeming. Exercise Nutritionist & Chiropractor
A common challenge among budding athletes heading away for an event is, of course, what foods to take. Whether it’s stocking up at the shops before travelling, deciding what to eat on the road, or preparing the perfect pre-race super meal, it’s an ever changing obstacle course to navigate! To make matters more confusing, many of us are opting for events in locations where both the local sources of food and means for preparing them are extra difficult.

Adaptability: the ultimate predictor of success

Darwinism.  Survival of the fittest.  Good ol’ fashioned evolution.  The idea that we, as a species, have evolved over many thousands of years is a concept we’re all familiar with.  When we refer to the characteristics of the members of a species that has survived any noteworthy existence here on earth, we think about things like physical strength and endurance, reproductive capacity, intelligence, environmental niche and so on and so forth.  Perhaps less commonly considered is a single, distinct concept – a solitary word even – that encompasses all of these things and is therefore, arguably, the defining factor of an individual’s aptitude to survive and thrive: adaptability.

4 Reasons You Need To Run With Others

Article by Tim Leeming. Exercise Nutritionist.

Extrovert, introvert, Type A or B or completely socially incompetent.  It doesn’t matter to me what kind of character you are, if you want to get the absolute best out of your body you need to run with other people from time to time.  The more serious you are about competing in an event – whether that be to set a new personal best, win the race or just finish it – the more important this becomes.  For those of you who simply run for pleasure with no end goal in mind, there’s still something in this for you.

Apple cider vinegar must have quite the ego right now, as the good press and publications about this probiotic food continue to flow.  We’ve shared a few ideas around apple cider vinegar (ACV) already. In this article, I go into a little more detail about the specific benefits it will give you as a runner.

Three Steps To Rapid Recovery

3/5/2017

Tim Leeming. Exercise Nutritionist.

Recovery is one of the biggest determinants of performance.  If you recover well, you can train more and train harder.  Your gains are greater.  Your capacity to keep on keeping on is increased.  If you don’t recover very well, and you’re left tired and sore and unmotivated for days on end after a tough session, the opposite to the above applies.

Nutrition is paramount when it comes to optimal recovery, and therefore peak performance – in training AND racing!  The food you eat can allow you to bounce back quicker and stronger than you were before that last training run.  I italicised food there because I always place a large emphasis on the use of real, whole foods to achieve health and performance as opposed to powdered potions and exquisitely overpriced lab-made concoctions.

These are the three most beneficial things you can do to promote the best possible recovery:

Ultra-Marathon Race Nutrition

“What should I eat?” they all ask.  “Well, that depends on a lot of things” I say.  This is usually followed by a subtle sigh, roll of the eyes or change of subject.  If the answer were so simple, it’d be on the internet somewhere easy to find and I’d be out of a job.  The fact is, every runner and every race is different, and so the way that one eats will vary.  Note I said the 'way' that someone eats.  I will reluctantly add that exactly 'what' each person eats will differ, too.

We’ve said it before; summer is a time of sunshine, celebration and – of course – temptation.  Being the silly season and summertime all at once, no one is going to blame you for indulging in a cold beer or wine around the BBQ, or some sweet treats from time to time.  Some of us may even have over indulged at Christmas dinner, the Boxing Day races or on New Year’s Eve – and that’s OK, too!  No, I’m not condoning binge drinking here; I’m simply saying it’s acceptable to let your hair down with friends and family once in a while!

With this in mind, I’ve got a few quick, simple and natural detoxing tools that you can use to bounce back from any over-indulging and keep yourself in healthy shape this summer.  The more of these you can do, the better you’ll feel.
