Event of the Week:
Kepler Challenge, NEW ZEALAND
The route that takes hikers three to four days to complete can be split into two sections. The first section takes runners from the control gates on the shores of Lake Te Anau up to Luxmore Hut. It then follows an undulating and exposed ridge line with spectacular views of the surrounding peaks before dropping runners steeply via a zig-zag track down to Iris Burn Hut. The second section is much flatter following to join Lake Manapouri and then the Waiau River before finishing back at the control gates.
As one of New Zealand's Great Walks, the Kepler Track is of a higher standard than many trails, and is very well formed, though even in early December it is not uncommon for the exposed tops to be covered with a fresh dusting of snow.
The first event was held in 1988 in honour of Quinton McKinnon who a century earlier discovered the McKinnon Pass on the Milford Track.
When: December
Where: Te Anau, NEW ZEALAND
Distance: 60km
Terrain: Mountain Trails
