Event of the Week
Race The Train, Wales
"Only a small number of elite runners manage to stay ahead of the train for the full distance." The event was the brainchild of local dentist Godfrey Worsey, and was first held in 1984. The first event hosted 48 runners, and now attracts 1,000+ runners from as far afield as New Zealand, Australia, and Hong Kong. |
The Mid Wales event runs from Tywyn to Abergynolwyn and back over a combination of public footpaths and farmland. Competitors attempt to beat the train back to Tywyn over 23km. The train stops at various locations allowing the rest of the field to catch up to the train, though only a small number of elite runners manage to stay ahead of the train for the full distance. Supporters and spectators can buy a ticket to ride the train and watch the event unfold.
