Thoreau said: “In the long run men only hit what they aim at. Therefore, though they should fail immediately, they had better aim at something high."
You may have fairly simple immediate goals for running. Lose some weight, get fit for summer or complete a particular event from your bucket list. That's all good. But I suggest you want to install health and well-being into your life for the duration of your life. Get a really clear idea of the lifestyle you want to lead. You may not get it exactly, but you will definitely head in the general direction. Life's like that.

Here's an example of how to write out your vision. Put yourself into this picture and see how you would tweak it to make it your own. The first thing you will notice is that not much of what follows is about running itself. But it can all come from your commitment to your sport.
It's a few years from now. You wake easily. There's no need for an alarm as you live within your natural rhythms. It's sometime around dawn on a weekend. You're still very much in love with your partner. The fitness you both have fuels a strong physical attraction. Maybe you made love last night. Maybe you make love before rising.
The breakfast table is laid out with a good range of simple healthy food. You eat slowly and with relish. You spend the morning helping out with a local sports team. It's good to know you can keep up with them easily. You spur them on and offer your advice from your experience. It brings a lot of friendships and quite a few laughs.
Lunch is a guilt-free blow out, maybe a whole lot of carbs at a local cafe, followed up with a smoothie or a coffee. After then it's your time. Maybe you take a romantic run with your partner, enjoying the flow and the conversation. Or maybe you have something more challenging in mind, pushing your limits on a personal project. It's just an ordinary weekend, so you don't overdo it. There's time for a few chores before dinner.
You still feel full of beans so you head out for the evening. You have energy to spare on socialising. You enjoy yourself. You don't feel the urge to drink away any stress.
You get home happy and early. You have another active day planned for tomorrow, stretching out your weekend. Each one feels like a mini-break away.
Take time out to write something like this for yourself. Really put some thought and effort into it. It's good to keep it more about how you feel rather than the details of pace or achievement. After all, that is what you are really going for. You will be surprised at how much this process helps you stay motivated. It will help you manifest the lifestyle you are seeking.
If you feel like it, share it with me here I will get back to you with a response to it to help you refine the process further. Click here to receive more articles like this one.
